David and Steve Gordon make music that makes a difference. For 25 years they've explored and expanded the boundaries of ambient, worldbeat and downtempo music; and are counted among the originators of the new age music genre. The Gordon Brothers are award-winning producers, composers, classically trained instrumentalists and the founders of Sequoia Records, a leading independent record label dedicated to creating music to enlighten the mind, nourish the soul and celebrate life.
Inspired by the tranquility of Sequoia National Park, David and Steve pioneered the use of nature sounds as an integral part of musical composition, beginning with their first album, Misty Forest Morning released in 1982. Several albums later, they turned to a more intimate and introspective approach, blending quiet nature sounds with meditative music in their perennial favorites, Garden of Serenity and Soothing Sanctuary. Pulse Magazine referred to their albums as “intimate, quiet, serene and spacious”.
In the 1990s, the Gordon Brothers added the consciousness-enhancing entrainment of hand drums and percussion to the mix, based on their work with drum circles and alchemical firedance rituals in the mountains of Southern California and the Sierras.
Their 1994 album Sacred Earth Drums was an innovative blending of Native American and African beats with contemporary electronics, guitars, piano and vocals that brought world-fusion music into new creative realms and was a #1 best-selling title for over two years following its release. They released several more albums developing this new style further, including Sacred Spirit Drums, about which NAPRA Review commented, "…the drumming is joyous," and the Billboard-charting Drum Medicine, that won the COVR awards for “Album of the Year” and “Best World Album.”
Beginning in 2002, the Gordons brought their creative world-fusion approach to chill-out downtempo electronica with the launch of their new label Sequoia Groove, that has become one of today’s leading sources of classy ambient music for lounging. 2008's Buddha-Lounge 6 is the latest in the classic Buddha-Lounge series that began that year, along with the related series Café de Luna and Hotel Tara. Sequoia Groove is also home to groundbreaking artists like Jens Gad (co-creator of Enigma) and Achillea.
It is David and Steve’s ear for positive, culturally adventurous music that has made them the industry leaders they are today, having sold over 1.75 million CDs worldwide. A recent N.A.R. survey listed the Gordon Brothers in the top 4 most popular artists as reported by alternative retailers, along with Enya and Loreena McKennitt. Their music has appeared in films and televisions shows, including Kissing Jessica Stein, The Parole Officer, Firece Light, Push, and the 2002 CBS Sports Xterra World Championship. The Gordon Brothers' most recent 2008 release, Yoga Planet is a mellow set of global chill/lounge grooves that creates a relaxed yet energized ambiance.
